Ah, the days when it used to be the norm to dress modestly. We now live in an era where women are encouraged to wear their clothes tighter, shorter, and sexier. Dressing modestly is becoming more and more extinct by the minute and less and less young women are willing to “cover up” what they’ve got. “If you’ve got it, flaunt it” goes the saying.
If you are a big, tall woman living over here, you might struggle to find clothes that fit you nicely. When I first came to Japan in 2005, there were almost no clothes that fit me. That’s not the case anymore. As Japanese people eat more and more Western food and waistlines increase, there are more and more large sizes available to diversify your wardrobe. So take heart; you are sure to find something!
Before I got married, I used to wear a lot of form fitting clothes, because that’s what everyone in my family wears and of course, you want to wear clothes that fit you well, right? Well, it didn’t work out like that. I don’t know about other areas in Japan, but in this Kanto region, I would get men following me in the grocery store, weirdos on the train, and creepsters trying to take pictures of my bum. Sickos have gotten a lot more bold in the past couple of years, so it would be wise to take action to protect yourself, ladies.
My first line of defense here is wearing a white mask when I go out. I’ve noticed since I’ve started wearing it that the number of people who follow me around has decreased. Since I have oily skin, my current masks have caused some acne breakouts, so you might want to be careful about what brands you choose. Next, I always try to be sure my bum is covered. I don’t know what the obsession with the derrière here in Japan is all about, but boy, do some guys love to chase it. Lastly, I wear my hair in a bun. If you get into a dangerous situation, you don’t want anything that people can grab. I’ve got pretty long hair, so I do my best to keep it out of the way as much as possible.
For those of you who by now think that I am crazy, I would advise you to take a double-take at how fast the world is deteriorating around you. At some point, I firmly believe that we will have victory over evil and I will be able to walk around freely again, but until then, it would be wise to be on guard, even if you’re mocked. I still love to see the world of fashion but am more careful about what I wear myself, because with the increase of porn use and sexual, in-your-face ads everywhere, I think it would be wise to keep yourself as inconspicuous as possible. It’s important to remember that the girls who get attacked first are dressed a certain way.
May God be with you and give you the wisdom and strength you need to make it through this day and everyday!
